The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
