Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
