The Black Phone Horror

Scott Derrickson's contained scarefest holds up well despite the lack of a continuation. Set in 1978 Denver, a series of kidnappings has rendered the youth frightened. But the old telephone in the room continues to ring, with spooky callers providing assistance, and the prescient dreams from his sibling Gwen might rescue him. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, 10.50pm, Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the battle between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for Mammon in Michael Showalter's delightfully tacky true story of the disgraced TV preacher and her criminal husband. The actor acts as the venal Jim, who declares at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. Both individuals commence monetising the people's religious faith. It's an extravaganza of tacky decor, overdone appearance and bad faith, however Chastain achieves to present the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Next Tuesday, late night, on Film4
