Fresh analysis indicates that patients who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using these treatments need to be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
Individuals who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Use is higher among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle management.
